Description

Get to know the historical and economic importance of txakolí in the 17th century, as well as its production, from the influence of Captain Sosoaga and his press, the oldest one in Euskadi.

The txakolí press, recently discovered at Sosoaga Palace, is considered a special artifact from the 17th century. As mentioned by Alberto Santana, historian and technologist of the Bizkaia Regional Delegation, “the oldest txakolí press in Basque Country is the piece from the Sosoaga Palace.” According to this expert, the press deserves to be considered a real asset of cultural interest.

Located in the restored Santa Elena Chapel, it benefits from a privileged location facing the municipal park. It is worth mentioning that ancient ordinances from the Middle Ages prohibited the drinking wine from La Rioja, along the Wine and Fishing Routes, until not even local txakolí remained. Efforts to convert it into a museum have relied on the participation of local restaurants and cooks and, above all, on txakolí producers that now operate in Lekeitio.
